Back-to-School and Children’s Mental Health Podcast: A Must-Listen for Parents and Caregivers

As the school year approaches, many children and families experience a mix of excitement, stress, and uncertainty. For some children, changes in routine, school expectations, friendships, and anxiety can make the transition especially challenging.

In this episode of Time to Talk, our former CEO, Tatum Wilson, and our Family Partnerships Program Manager, Vicki Cochrane, from Children’s Mental Health Ontario, join the Ontario Caregiver Organization to discuss children’s mental health, school-related challenges, and the supports available to families. The conversation focuses on helping parents and caregivers recognize when a child may be struggling, the importance of early intervention, and ways schools and community organizations can work together to support children, youth, and families.

This episode explores:

  • Signs that a child may need additional mental health support
  • Why early intervention can make a difference
  • Common back-to-school challenges, including anxiety and school attendance concerns
  • Strategies caregivers can use to support their child at home
  • How to access community mental health resources and services
  • Updates to practical tools such as the School Mental Health Backpack and resources designed to support school attendance

A Helpful Reminder for Caregivers

One of the key messages from this episode is the importance of trusting your instincts. As a parent or caregiver, you know your child or youth best. If something doesn’t seem right, it’s okay to ask questions, seek support, and explore available resources. Early conversations can help prevent challenges from becoming larger concerns, but it is important to remember it is never too late to seek support.

Why Listen?

Whether your child is thriving, experiencing occasional worries, or facing ongoing mental health challenges, this episode offers practical tips, reassurance, and valuable resources. It is a thoughtful reminder that parents and caregivers are not alone and that help is available.

Take a few minutes to listen and add some practical tools to your parenting toolkit as you navigate the school year and beyond.
